IEC 60475 Transformer Oil Sampling Guide
Using Flexible Aluminium Bottles for Accurate DGA
Based on IEC 60475:2022
TriboTech ApS
Purpose: Ensure oil samples remain representative for Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) to assess transformer health. Always wear PPE and follow site safety protocols.
Required Equipment
- Flexible aluminium bottles: 120ml (DGA only), 1200ml (DGA + oil properties)
- Screw caps with PTFE/nitrile gaskets (>30% nitrile)
- Oil-compatible tubing
- Sampling valve & drain container
- Paper towels for cleaning bottle exterior
- Thermometer for oil temperature
- Protective transport case
- PPE: Gloves, safety glasses, grounding
Step-by-Step Procedure
Prepare
Clean equipment; connect tubing to sampling valve
Flush
Open valve slowly; let 1-2L flow laminarly to waste (no bubbles)
Rinse Bottle
Fill bottle 1/3, discard to waste
Fill Bottle
Fill from bottom with laminar flow; overflow ~2 volumes
Seal
Remove tubing (oil flowing); squeeze sides; cap tightly
Finalize
Close valve; label sample; retighten cap after cooling

Guidance & Standards Reference
OEM Alignment: Procedures should always align with the transformer manufacturer's (OEM) specific maintenance instructions.
Safety Protocol: Strict adherence to site-specific safety protocols and PPE requirements is mandatory and supersedes this guide.
IEC Reference: This guide is a simplified visual summary based on IEC 60475:2022 (Method of sampling insulating liquids). It is not a substitute for the comprehensive standard.
